Before you start…

Need help at any point? Just sent an email to help@yarnbitsshop.com and I’ll get back to you ASAP!

Color choices

There’s 6 colors of yarn included in the box. Prior to starting the CAL, choose what you would like to do with the color orders. There are 6 different motifs that will be completed at the end of the CAL! Each are different patterns so the yarn color order can be the unifying method.

Option 1:

Color 1-2 are used up for the centers (3 each)

Color 3-4 are used up for the next set (3 each)

Colors 5-6 are used up with the final borders.

Option 2:

Each color is used for one motif center. A contrasting color is used for the next set. And remaining colors are picked for the final borders.

Colors 1-3 are used for centers (2 each)

Colors 4-6 are used for next set (2 each)

Remaining colors are used for final borders.

The layout of the pattern is designed to complete ALL the centers and next set before going to the final borders. So you’ll know what is used up prior to the last set of patterns.

Day 1: Complete the center and ALL points for the first star with Color A.

Open your gift! Catch-up with patterns as needed!

Day 31: Finishing Up!

Assuming your 6 starry pentagons are completed, today is all about getting started with deciding on what you want to make out of them and/or putting them together.

With the 6 pentagons, you can make:

Pillow covers with 2 pentagons sewed together- each side will feature a different one! You could also sew 4 together with 2 pentagons per side! {Easy}

– Banner to hang! {Easy}

Table Runner/Cover! {Easy since gaps can be ignored}

Blanket with gaps to be filled and/or irregular shaped- since these are pentagons, there will be gaps but the remaining yarn (if any) could be used to fill in gaps! {Intermediate due to gaps}

– Poof (like ottoman) the top and sides would be reasonable to complete but depending if you want something to stuff, you may need more yarn to complete the bottom. But If you would like a cover for a poof/ottoman, you may just need a way to secure it on!  {Intermeditae-Advanced due to shaping} DISCLAIMER- I only provide the initial method of sewing poof together but not the filling in the gaps since a lot more yarn is needed. ONLY do this if you want to be testing out the gaps crochet work yourself.

Finishing Patterns

Pillow Cover Steps

Decide whether you would like 1 or 2 pentagon per side for your first pillow.

If you would like to do 1 pentagon per side, choose your two pentagons and line them up with the right side facing out on both sides. Optionally, use stitch markers to secure corners for now.

You can sew OR crochet the edges together around starting in the first corner and picking up both sides at the same time. Since the stich work is not 1 to 1 with the pentagons, pick up spaces that are lined up comfortably as you go. If crocheting, use single crochet and complete (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in each corner sp. Check for warping after 2-3 sides before continuining. Work until almost completed then stuff the pillow to desired firmness and finish the gap. Weave in ends.

If you would like to do 2 pentagon per side, choose 4 pentagons with 2 per side. For each side- pick a pair and sew ONE edge together from each pair. I would do the invisible seam but that is a personal preference!

After sewing 2 sets of 2 pentagons together, line the pairs up with the right side facing out on both sides. Optionally, use stitch markers to secure corners for now. Then follow the sewing/crocheting method outlined above for attaching the two sides together with one edit for the valleys. If sewing, there is no difference. If crocheting- complete sc3tog with the sp before center, the center, and the sp after the center. The corner work is the same otherwise!

Banner Steps

After weaving in all ends, pick one yarn color for the chain and edge work for attaching the banners.

Decide on spacing between banners- this determines the chain sp!

Ch desired length (something easy to remember like 40 or 60!) for banner end. The length here should be the same for the beg and end (before and after the full banner- does not need to be the same as the ch sp between the pentagons)

*With the first pentagon, sc in the first corner sp, sc in same sp, sc in each sp to next corner, 2 sc in 2nd corner- first pentagon attached!

**ch the desired length between pentagons- this can be the same number of ch as the beg or a different number of ch if you wanted more/less space between pentagons.

Repeat * with 2nd pentagon. Then repeat ** and * until all pentagons are attached!

After the last pentagon, ch the same number of sp as the beg ch and fasten off.

Attaching Steps

With all the pentagons, attach as shown above starting with 2 pairs of 2 pentagons for the middle. Pick a pair and sew ONE edge together from each pair. I would do the invisible seam but that is a personal preference! Complete 2 pairs. Then attach the two ends in same way you sewed the pairs, sewing two sides continuously for each end pentagon. Weave in all ends!

With all the pentagons, attach as shown above starting with 3 pairs of 2 pentagons. Pick a pair and sew ONE edge together from each pair. I would do the invisible seam but that is a personal preference! Complete all 3 pairs.

Then a round of sc on the ourside (the border of the full) is used to attach all 3 pairs together.

Start with one pair in a corner sp. ch 1, (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in corner sp, sc in each sp to next corner. If it’s a valley where the corners need to be attach: 2 sc in corner sp then 2 sc in corner sp on other side of valley, continue with sc in each sp to next corner. If it is a valley on the sides of the outside pairs, sc3tog with center 3 sps. Complete () for all corner sp that are peaks.

Weave in all ends!

Filling in Gaps

For both layout above the gap is the same shape/size. There are no stitch counts due to the likely variation in pentagon sizes.

Round 1: sl st to the middle of a side, ch 1, sc in each sp around with sc2tog over sps at corners to attach points together more securely. This round is NOT decreasing sts much but to establish baseline. Check that each side is the same number of sts between points. sl st to beg sc, do not turn.

Round 2: ch 1, sc in each sp around with sc3tog (sp before center, center, and sp after center) at shallow valleys and sc5tog (2 sp before center, center, and 2 sp after center) at narrow valleys. Each side should decrease by 3 or the total st count should have decreased by 12.

Round 3 and on: Repeat Round 2 until gap is almost completely closed. Check for warping after each round!

Poof Steps

With all 6 pentagons, attach 5 pentagons to the sides of the center pentagon. Sew ONE edge from of each of the 5 outside pentagons to the center pentagon (1 in image). I would do the invisible seam but that is a personal preference! Then sew the neighboring pentagons together (2 in image). This gives you a top and sides that slopes outwards towards the bottom.

Now this is the part that I did not test or figure out- the bottom points and completing the poof. What I WOULD DO is: complete the gaps (sc3tog for all valleys!) between all the peaks to make a straight edge at the bottom, make a bottom circle the size needed then sew the bottom circle to the edge and stuff before closing it. The circle would be hidden if placed on floor!

Stitches Guide

2-dc Cluster: [yo, insert hook in space, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

3-dc Cluster: [yo, insert hook in space, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] three times, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

4-dc Custer: [yo, insert hook in space, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] four times, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

6-dc Cluster: [yo, insert hook in space, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] six times, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Crossed DC (in same sp): dc in sp, yo, insert hook in SAME sp but behind the first dc, pick up loop, yo twice. There should be a twist created with the two dc.

Crossed DC (over two spaced): skip first sp, dc in next, dc in sp skipped. This creates a cross between the two dc.

Bobble: [Yo, insert hook into stitch, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] five times. There should be 6 loops on the hook. Yo and pull through all loops. Ch 1 (if not stated in pattern)- this “secures” the bobble and creates an eye to work with in the next row/round.
