Granny Squares are iconic in crocheting and there have been many variations created over the years. With this light and fun yarn, this granny square pattern is a relaxing one to work up and perfect for working outside in the heat since you can do it in pieces! After the squares are made, you can create a lacy bag, a pillow cover, or a scarf. Two joining techniques are outlined depending on your preference and skill level.

Lacy Dual Colored Granny Square

Skill Level: Easy | Hook: Size J or 6mm | Gauge/Dimensions of Square: 6 inch across

This pattern is the whole square EXCEPT for the last round, which is the joining round for those who would like to use that technique.

Color notes:

Make 8 of each color combination:

Color A= Ice Blue and Color B = Lavender
Color A= Lavender and Color B = Ice Blue

With size J/6mm hook and Color A, ch 3.

Round 1:

dc in 3rd ch from hook, 15 dc in same sp
sl st to 1st dc (beg ch does not count as dc)

Stitches Count: 16 dc

Round 2:

With color A, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same sp,
*ch 3, sk next sp,** 2 dc in next sp,
Repeat from * around, ending at **
Sl st to top of beg ch and fasten off Color A

Stitches Count: 16 dc with 8 ch-3 sp

Round 3:

With Color B, sl st into any ch-3 sp.
Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same sp
*Ch 3, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp
Repeat from * around
Ch 3 and sl st to beg ch. Fasten off color B

Stitches Count: 24 dc with 8 ch-3 sp

Round 4:

With Color A, sl st into any ch-3 sp.
Ch 3 (counts as dc), [2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in same sp
*Ch 3, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3**, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 sp
Repeat from * around ending at **
sl st to beg ch.

Stitches Count: 36 dc with 12 ch-3 sp

Round 5:

Ch 3 (counts as dc),
Dc in each of next 2 sp to corner,
*[3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in corner ch-3 sp
Dc in each sp and 3 dc in each ch-3 sp across to next corner
Repeat from * around
sl st to beg ch and fasten off Color A

Stitches Count: 21 dc/side or 84 dc total with 4 ch-3 corner sp

Weave in ends and make 16 total with 8 of each color order.

NOTE: More may need to be made depending on which item you are making. See below for reference:

Bag: 18 squares needed- 10 of one color order and 8 of the other

Pillow: 16 squares needed- 8 of each color order

Scarf: 18 squares needed- 10 of one color order and 8 of the other

Joining Techniques (Read prior to joining squares)

EASY METHOD: Invisible Seam Mattress Stitch or Whip Stitch (not invisible seam)

Depending on whether you want an invisible seam or not, the squares can be joined together by sewing. The Invisible Seam with the Mattress stitch is the preferred method and here is a good link to see how it works: https://yayforyarn.com/invisible-seam-crochet/ or search for “Invisible Seam Crochet”. Alternatively, if you don’t mind seeing your seam- you can use the whip stitch method.

INTERMEDIATE METHOD: Join-as-you-go Crochet Round

This is the 6th round of square pattern and crocheted as you attach squares.

With the base round, the joins occur with the ch-1 spaces on BOTH squares being joined. The working square is the square you are crocheting this round and picking up ch-1 sp from the joining square that ALREADY has the last round completed. Typically, you would have a square to join, complete the first side without any joining, then start joining the next 1-2 sides with the joining square(s).

Base Joining Round (without actually joining anything):

With the other color that round 4-5 was NOT worked with, sl st into any corner sp.
Ch 1, [2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc] in same sp,
*Repeat (sk next sp, ch 1, sc in next) across to next corner
Ch 1, sk last sp before corner,** [2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc] in corner sp
Repeat from * around, ending at **
Sl st to beg sc, fasten off.

Joining Steps for ch-1 spaces:

Sc in working square sp, sk next sp, drop loop from hook, pick up corresponding ch-1 sp on the joining square, pick up loop and pull through space, ch 1, Repeat from beg.

Joining Steps for corners:

(2 sc, ch 1) in the working square corner sp, drop loop from hook, pick up joining square ch-2 sp, pick up loop and pull through sp, (ch 1, 2 sc) in working square corner sp

Typical joining steps:

Start at corner sp, complete one side of base joining round (no joining)
In the 2nd corner of the working square, join at corner to the joining square corner.
Work joining steps across the 2nd side of the working square with the corresponding side of the joining square.
In the 3rd corner of the working square, join to the same joining square just worked with joining steps for the corner. If the working square 3rd corner is in a valley, pick up BOTH the corner of the square about to be joined and the corner of the square just worked with in one go (pick up both, pull through both, ch 1 over both).
Work joining steps across the 23rd side of the working square with the corresponding side of the joining square.
In the 4th corner of the working square, join to the same joining square just worked with joining steps for the corner.
Complete last side of base joining round (no joining).
